College Football Top 25 Week 1 Picks and Predictions

San Jose State at 1 Alabama

Though the number one ranked Crimson Tide will begin their season without stud and Heisman-winning RB Mark Ingram, it really doesn’t matter. Like most week 1 games, this one is so one-sided it’s laughable. Expect the tide to roll all over the Spartans. Prediction: 1 Alabama 52, San Jose St 14

3 Boise State at 10 Virginia Tech (Monday, Sept 6)

Boise State looked impressive in the Fiesta Bowl and they’ll try to justify their high ranking this year. The Hokies will be ready, however, and should squeeze out the win in a Monday night thriller. Prediction: 10 Virginia Tech 28, 3 Boise State 27

Miami (OH) at 4 Florida

The Tim Tebow era is over for the Gators, but don’t expect them to crumble. They’re good and will be all season. Prediction: 4 Florida 48, Miami (OH) 10

5 Texas at Rice

Sophomore QB Garrett Gilbert replaces Colt McCoy at the helm for the Longhorns and should do well. Texas has won 10 in a row against the Owls and today will be no different. Prediction: 5 Texas 42, Rice 10

24 Oregon State at 6 TCU

The oft-underestimated Horned Frogs went 12-0 in 2009 before losing to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. They’re tough and more importantly – driven. Though the Beavers present an early-season challenge, they shouldn’t hold up today. Prediction: 6 TCU 34, 24 Oregon State 21

Time is running short for me – here are the rest of the predictions:

Utah State at 7 Oklahoma – Prediction: 7 Oklahoma 42, Utah State 10

Western Kentucky at 8 Nebraska – Prediction 8 Nebraska 52, Western Kentucky 7

Eastern Illinois at 9 Iowa – Prediction 9 Iowa 41, Eastern Illinois 9

New Mexico at 11 Oregon – Prediction 11 Oregon 45, New Mexico 13

12 Wisconsin at UNLV – Prediction 12 Wisconsin 38, UNLV 24

South Carolina State at 16 Georgia Tech – 16 Georgia Tech 42, South Carolina State 9

Tennessee Tech at 17 Arkansas – Prediction 17 Arkansas 52, Tennessee Tech 3

21 LSU at 18 North Carolina – Prediction 18 UNC 24, 21 LSU 21

Youngstown State at 19 Penn State – Prediction 19 Penn State 38, Youngstown State 3

Samford at 20 Florida State – Prediction 20 Florida State 48, Samford 7

Arkansas State at 22 Auburn – Prediction 22 Auburn 34, Arkansas State 3

Louisiana Lafayette at 23 Georgia – Prediction 23 Georgia 55, LA Lafayette 3

Coastal Carolina at 25 West Virginia – Prediction 25 WVU 47, Coastal Carolina 0

Completed Games:

2 Ohio State defeated Marshall 45-7 on Thursday

13 Miami defeated Florida A&M 45-0 on Thursday

14 USC defeated Hawaii 49-36 on Thursday

15 Pittsburgh lost to Utah 27-24 on Thursday

So, this year I have the 8th pick in my league’s fantasy football draft (12 team league). I’m pouring over the “experts” lists and cheat sheets, scanning mock drafts online, and skimming some random fan forums for likely picks.

I don’t know how much I like my options. Here are some of the names that have been nabbed near spot number 8:

Drew Brees

Drew Brees is projected by many to be the top QB in 2010 fantasy leagues.

Sure he’d be great to have on my team, but I’ve never been excited about him and picking a QB in the first round. The one time I picked a QB in round 1, I got burned. Bad. Tom Brady. Bastard. I’m still salty about that – and it hurts my vocabulary just thinking about it. If he’s there, though, I’ll have to consider it. I will need a backup plan, however . . .

Steven Jackson

Steven Jackson is a beast and a workhorse, but can I put my faith in anyone on the Rams?

Sjax is a beast, but I don’t know that I have faith in him to last all 16 games behind that line. With Sam Bradford behind center, Jackson will be the workhorse and will definitely have his opportunities. His touchdowns are expected to climb, but I just can’t see myself drafting any Rams players. Ever.

Frank Gore

Gore should see another jump in TDs in 2010.

I like Frank Gore. He’s talented and fun to watch. He had a good season in 2009, jumping his touchdowns into double-digits and posting solid figures in rushing and receiving yards. He has not had an injury-free season since 2006, however, and the 49ers rarely give him 20 rush attempts.

Andre Johnson

With Fitz depending on Leinart now, Andre Johnson has been projected to be the top WR in fantasy this year.

I like Andre Johnson too – he’s burned me when I’ve played against him in the past and his chemistry with QB Matt Schaub is spectacular. Barring any injuries, he could very well lead the league in receiving yards for the third year in a row. I have to say, though I usually go with a running back for the first round (and usually second, depending upon falls, etc), Johnson is whispering my name.

Michael Turner

Bowling ball Michael Turner runs and runs and runs.

Michael Turner was a workhorse in 2008, with over 370 carries. That’s a lot of carries and one of the things that the “experts” blamed for his 2009 injuries. I don’t know that I buy that, but when the guy is limited in the passing game and racks up carry after carry, I don’t know that I can risk my first pick on him – he’ll get injured if I pick him. If it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have none at all.

So, let me know your thoughts. These are the five players I’ve seen the most in the number 8 spot (with the occasional Rodgers, Moss, or Manning), so I’m fairly certain that one of them will be on my team. I may not like my options, but you don’t have to like your options to win at fantasy football.

Oh, it’s an easy sleeper pick. The Bears move to Mike Martz on offense and BAM – suddenly the media expects good things from a receiving corps they’ve bad-mouthed for years. WRs Hester and Knox have been hyped to fit the offense spectacularly due to their speed and will likely be drafted a bit too high in some fantasy leagues. My money is on Aromashodu. He’s big and athletic, the type of receiver that will go up and grab an errant pass from QB Jay Cutler – which is why he became a late-season favorite last year. Aromashodu should be drafted somewhere near round 10 (or later – a good waiver wire pick up), and has been projected by the experts to nab near one hundred fantasy points for the season. Sure that’s nothing to write home about, but someone you may want for bye week starts and handcuffing opponents.

The Bears WRs will be the experts and analysts’ favorites for fantasy sleepers and supposedly under-the-radar stars in 2010 – just make sure you get the right one.

So the title may be blunt. So an article/title about sodomy on a football website may not be viewed as ‘pertinent’ or ‘appropriate’ or ‘correct,’ but after forcing myself through last night’s NFL Network Thursday Night Football debacle, I have to say something and I have to say it loudly (and most definitely inappropriately – I apologize to everyone in the world offended by the article, with the exception of Matt Millen and Bob Papa):

Matt Millen - Turning NFL Broadcasting's Brown-Eye Blue!

Matt Millen and Bob Papa are the cleft-palates of NFL commentary . . .

Matt Millen and Bob Papa are the toothless grins of NFL commentary . . . (the old and creepy kind – not ‘kid-with-lollipop’ kind)

Matt Millen and Bob Papa are the ‘ripped half of my tongue off as a child, licking the pole outside in an ice storm’ of NFL commentary . . .

Matt Millen and Bob Papa are the ‘why the long face’ jokes of NFL commentary . . .

Matt Millen and Bob Papa are the . . . (insert witticism here . . .)

I could go on, but frankly I’m sickened by the lack of energy coming from the NFL’s own television network. It’s appalling to think that the league can’t find someone with not only some credibility, but an announcer’s voice for crying-out-loud. I had to re-adjust the audio settings on my television, receiver, and cable box six times before I was convinced that it was in fact the absolute worst commentary (audibly) that I’ve ever heard. I’m tired and its been a long few days, so I’m going to leave it up to the FP readers to provide me with some witticisms.

Dear God, make a change for football fans around the country! Smite them, oh Mighty Lord with fire and brimstone (is that right?), as they sodomize the beauty that is broadcasting!

I beg you . . .

PS – please comment and throw in your clever lines:
Matt Millen and Bob Papa are the . . . (insert witticism here . . .)

Start ‘em!

Willis McGahee – RB Baltimore Ravens vs Cleveland – Willis has not only been getting the carries, but he’s been getting the carries in the red zone. With solid games against the Chiefs and the Chargers under his belt, expect a scrimmage against the Browns to be no different.

Aaron Rodgers – QB Green Bay Packers at St. Louis – Rodgers has been consistent (at least on fantasy football paper) and should light up the Rams’ secondary. Despite being sacked 6 times last week, he still managed to put up 261 yards and a touchdown. Look for a few more scores out of the Packs’ passing game this week.

Fred Jackson – RB Buffalo Bills vs New Orleans – Freddie has shown what he can do as the starter and with Marshawn Lynch out for a bit longer, he won’t disappoint. Though he won’t put up the numbers a lot of experts have predicted this week, his receiving ability does put him in the lime light. The Bills will need to utilize Jackson to stand a chance against the surging Saints.

Felix Jones – RB Dallas Cowboys vs Carolina – With RB Marion Barber expected to be out (or limited at-best) this Sunday, expect Jones to pick up the load. With more carries under his belt than usual, the speedster Jones should be explosive. Expect big things this week against the Panthers.

Kyle Orton – QB Denver Broncos at Oakland – Okay, so Orton hasn’t been exactly pretty thus far, but he’s been a consistent scorer in the fantasy world. Going up against Oakland, he should be able to make some plays and drop a few TD passes. Look for another decent double-digit performance.

Felix Jones looks ready to take the load against Carolina in Week 3

Sit ‘em!

LaDainian Tomlinson – RB San Diego Chargers vs Miami – LT sat last week and was expected to play this week against the Dolphins. Though he may see a few snaps, he’s not 100% and should not be relied on heavily. Sit him for another week and hope for the best.

Wes Welker - WR New England Patriots vs Atlanta – Welker sat last minute against the Jets and is expected to be a game-time decision. Why risk a roster spot on an iffy-at-best prospect this week? If you’re bent on a Patriot receiver and Edeleman is available for a quick waiver-wire snag, go for it.

TJ Houshmandzadeh - WR Seattle Seahawks vs Chicago – Ol’ TJ has been running his mouth this week about the Bears not looking his way during free agent season and promises to light them up. It’s not going to happen. P.S. Housh – try not being the third-best receiver on a crappy franchise and maybe your word will carry some weight. Sit him until he proves he can keep up with his tongue.

Brian Westbrook – RB Philadelphia Eagles vs Kansas City - Westbrook has been ailing, but still received his touches last week against the Saints. Week 3 pits the Eagles against the lowly Chiefs and offers an exciting debut of a former gem in Mike Vick. The Eagles aren’t concerned and will have distraction on their side. Unless you simply need 4-6 points out of him this week, sit him until he’s ready to go at full steam.

Cedric Benson – RB Cincinnati Bengals vs Pittsburgh – Cincy has given the ball to Benson thus far and he’s delivered, but the Steelers are a different sort of defense. He may approach the double-digit fantasy mark simply because he’s going to get the carries, but don’t expect another 141 yard performance. If you’ve got options, and considering how low Benson was drafted – you should, then let him ride the pine for a week.
