Fantasy Football 2009: Week 3 Start ‘ems and Sit ‘ems

Start ‘em!

Willis McGahee – RB Baltimore Ravens vs Cleveland – Willis has not only been getting the carries, but he’s been getting the carries in the red zone.  With solid games against the Chiefs and the Chargers under his belt, expect a scrimmage against the Browns to be no different.

Aaron Rodgers – QB Green Bay Packers at St. Louis – Rodgers has been consistent (at least on fantasy football paper) and should light up the Rams’ secondary.  Despite being sacked 6 times last week, he still managed to put up 261 yards and a touchdown.  Look for a few more scores out of the Packs’ passing game this week.

Fred Jackson – RB Buffalo Bills vs New Orleans – Freddie has shown what he can do as the starter and with Marshawn Lynch out for a bit longer, he won’t disappoint.  Though he won’t put up the numbers a lot of experts have predicted this week, his receiving ability does put him in the lime light.  The Bills will need to utilize Jackson to stand a chance against the surging Saints.

Felix Jones – RB Dallas Cowboys vs Carolina – With RB Marion Barber expected to be out (or limited at-best) this Sunday, expect Jones to pick up the load.  With more carries under his belt than usual, the speedster Jones should be explosive.  Expect big things this week against the Panthers.

Kyle OrtonQB Denver Broncos at Oakland – Okay, so Orton hasn’t been exactly pretty thus far, but he’s been a consistent scorer in the fantasy world.  Going up against Oakland, he should be able to make some plays and drop a few TD passes.  Look for another decent double-digit performance.

Sit ‘em!

LaDainian Tomlinson – RB San Diego Chargers vs Miami – LT sat last week and was expected to play this week against the Dolphins.  Though he may see a few snaps, he’s not 100% and should not be relied on heavily.  Sit him for another week and hope for the best.

Wes Welker - WR New England Patriots vs Atlanta – Welker sat last minute against the Jets and is expected to be a game-time decision.  Why risk a roster spot on an iffy-at-best prospect this week?  If you’re bent on a Patriot receiver and Edeleman is available for a quick waiver-wire snag, go for it.

TJ Houshmandzadeh - WR Seattle Seahawks vs Chicago – Ol’ TJ has been running his mouth this week about the Bears not looking his way during free agent season and promises to light them up.  It’s not going to happen.  P.S. Housh – try not being the third-best receiver on a crappy franchise and maybe your word will carry some weight.  Sit him until he proves he can keep up with his tongue.

Brian Westbrook – RB Philadelphia Eagles vs Kansas City -  Westbrook has been ailing, but still received his touches last week against the Saints.  Week 3 pits the Eagles against the lowly Chiefs and offers an exciting debut of a former gem in Mike Vick.  The Eagles aren’t concerned and will have distraction on their side.  Unless you simply need 4-6 points out of him this week, sit him until he’s ready to go at full steam.

Cedric Benson – RB Cincinnati Bengals vs Pittsburgh – Cincy has given the ball to Benson thus far and he’s delivered, but the Steelers are a different sort of defense.  He may approach the double-digit fantasy mark simply because he’s going to get the carries, but don’t expect another 141 yard performance.  If you’ve got options, and considering how low Benson was drafted – you should, then let him ride the pine for a week.

Fantasy Football 2009: Week 2 Start ‘ems and Sit ‘ems

Start ‘em!

Brandon Jacobs – RB New York Giants at Dallas – There’s two arguments here:  1 – Jacobs was a high enough pick that you’d start him anyway, or 2 – that maybe starting in Dallas isn’t the best option if you’re relatively deep.  I like the play against the Cowboys.  By relying on Jacobs and company in the rushing game, the Giants may be able to keep QB Tony Romo and the Cowboy offense off of the field.  Look for Brandon to net a few yards and scores.

Brett Favre - QB Minnesota Vikings at Detroit - Picking on Detroit’s secondary after last weeks routing by the Saints is not exactly a stretch, but the Lions should have 8 in the box for a good portion of the game – attempting to stave off Adrian Peterson’s rushing antics.  While he won’t put up 6 touchdowns, Brett should have a solid double-digit outing.

Fred Jackson - RB Buffalo Bills vs Tampa Bay – Jackson looked good last week filling in for Marshawn Lynch and shouldn’t disappoint this week against the Bucs.  Tampa Bay proved ineffective against Dallas last week and should lay down a few yards for Freddie.  Look for a score and low double-digits out of Jackson in Week 2.

Fred Jackson looks to continue rolling against the Bucs.

Fred Jackson looks to continue rolling against the Bucs.

Santonio Holmes - WR Pittsburgh Steelers at Chicago – Santonio had an impressive stat line in Pittsburgh’s pass-happy debut last Thursday, eclipsing 130 yards and netting a score.  Though they won’t be nearly as aerial against the Bears (Roethlisberger can’t throw that much again, can he?), Holmes is still a major weapon against a less-than stable Bears’ defense.  He may not hit the century-mark, but he’ll score.

Cedric Benson – RB Cincinnati Bengals at Green Bay – Benson slipped in most FF drafts though he probably shouldn’t have.  He fits in Cincy and they need him in Cincy.  While he won’t see 1,500 yards this season, he will see 20 carries a game and fairly likely, the end zone a few times.  Look for the Bengals to hand off early and attempt to slow down the Packers before they get sucked into a scrambling game of catch-up.  Benson’s line should almost mirror that of his against Denver.

Sit ‘em!

Philadelphia Eagles D/ST vs New Orleans – Some will argue that after last week’s performance, it’d be a crime to sit Philly’s D at any point this season.  They’d be wrong.  New Orleans QB Drew Brees came out firing for 6 touchdowns and back-up running back Mike Bell squeaked out 143 yards rushing in Week 1.  Although they played the Lions, they got a solid warm-up and feel good scrimmage under their belt and should be clicking on all cylinders.  If you’ve got the Eagles and no other options, cross your fingers for another punt return by DJax, but probability isn’t working in your favor.  They may play well, but they’ll give up some points this week.

Steve Slaton – RB Houston Texans at Tennessee – Slaton’s rough opener against the Jets was just a preview for this game.  Though the Titans may have lost DT Albert Haynesworth, their run D looked solid against the Steelers on opening night.  Tennessee will not be an easy opponent in the running game so unless Steve lights up as a receiver, his stat line should prove less-than-stellar.

Brady Quinn – QB Cleveland Browns at Denver – Brady wasn’t spectacular in his debut against Minnesota and frankly should have had better numbers in the second half while the Browns attempted to come back.  Denver’s secondary looked solid against Carson Palmer, so unless Cleveland has some play-makers step up, Quinn’s numbers will be mediocre at best.  He should be a back-up on your team if you’ve got him, but keep the mouse away from him this week.

Steve Smith – WR Carolina Panthers at Atlanta – Smith was once a stud in the fantasy football world, but that was before.  This is now and in the now, Jake Delhomme is garbage a flaming bag of poopy.  Unless ol’ Jake gets his act together, Smith’s value is diminished.  Though YAC is always the plus-side to Steve’s game, you can’t cross your fingers hoping for his 3 touches to turn into gold.  Leave him on the bench if you’ve got options and wait for Carolina to mature.

Steve Smith hopes that QB Jake Delhomme doesnt flake again in Week 2.

Steve Smith hopes that QB Jake Delhomme doesn't flake again in Week 2.

Carson Palmer – QB Cincinnati Bengals at Green Bay – Palmer looks hobbled and didn’t perform well last week against Denver.  Given the Packers secondary (see Cutler’s performance last week) and the fact that the game is on the road, Week 2 doesn’t look any better for Carson.  If they’re smart, they’ll give Benson the ball.  If they’re successful, they’ll keep giving Benson the ball.  Though he may put up some yards, Palmer will throw a pick or two this week.  Mark my words.

Waiver Wire Pick Ups:

Mike Bell - RB New Orleans Saints – If he wasn’t picked up last week in your league then you’ve got a shot at winning it all because you’re playing against idiots.

Jamal Lewis – RB Cleveland Browns – The passing game behind Brady Quinn will be lackluster for some time and with injuries to the rest of the RB corps, he’s a solid back-up play.

Isaac Bruce – WR San Francisco 49ers - The immortal Bruce always seems to creep up the depth chart and could pay off during up-coming bye weeks.

Louis Murphy – WR Oakland Raiders – Murphy looked like the main option for QB JaMarcus Russell in the Raiders’ opener and shows some promise as a formidable optional play this season.

Byron Leftwich – QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Byron looks like he should be a consistent back-up option, especially if you were dumb enough to draft QB Jake Delhomme . . .

Fantasy Football Duds and Studs 2009 – Week 1

No Gravatar

With the NFL season official now, the fantasy football scene has already exploded with some notable and less-than-worthy performances. Here’s a look a 2009 Week 1 Fantasy Football Duds and Studs:

Studs:

Drew Brees – QB New Orleans Saints – Brees lit up the <cough> Detroit secondary for 6 touchdown passes and over 350 yards.  Sure, the Lions went 0 and 16 last year.  Sure, the game was played in New Orleans.  All nay-saying aside, it doesn’t matter who you play: 6 touchdown passes is an amazing effort and should keep the Saints marching into Week 2.

Adrian Peterson – RB Minnesota Vikings – AP ran All Day over the Browns in Cleveland, netting 180 yards on 25 carries (7.2 yard average) for 3 scores.  Everyone expects solid games out of Peterson, but delivering gems like this on the road, particularly during the over-hyped debut of Number 4, is quite the feat.

Philadelphia Eagles D/ST – Not only did the Eagles defense only allow 10 points from the Panthers in Carolina, but they held them to a mere 169 total yards and forced 7 turnovers.  DE Victor Abiamiri returned a fumble early in the second quarter to put Philly up for good, while DJax (WR/PR DeSean Jackson) solidified their lead with an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown just 4 minutes later.  Kudos to the Eagles for a stud performance unlikely to be matched this season.

The Eagles forced 7 turnovers at Carolina on Sunday.

The Eagles forced 7 turnovers at Carolina on Sunday.

Joe Flacco – QB Baltimore Ravens – Flacco threw for a career-high 307 yards and 3 touchdowns against the lowly Chiefs in the Ravens home-opener on Sunday.  Kudos to the sophomore QB getting off on the right foot for the new season.

Thomas Jones – RB New York Jets – Jones was a performer most of last year in the world of fantasy football and didn’t disappoint in the Jets’ opener in Houston last weekend, racking up over 100 yards rushing and 2 scores in the second half of New York’s domination of the Texans.

Duds:

Jake Delhomme - QB Carolina Panthers – Oh, Jake.  Poor Jake.  Ol’ Jake was Munson-ed in Carolina on Sunday, throwing 4 picks and losing a fumble before being yanked from the game.  Sure, Carolina’s a running team, but with WR Steve Smith and a few years’ experience, you’d think he’d have something to offer.  Put him on waivers and go wash your hands if he was anywhere near your fantasy team.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers D/ST – The new-look D looked awful at home against the Cowboys on Sunday, giving up over 462 yards and 34 points to Tony Romo and company.  Without a few late garbage scores from the Bucs offense, this one could have dismantled their pride.

Willie Parker – RB Pittsburgh Steelers – Fast Willie Parker wasn’t fast on Thursday’s season opener against the Tennessee Titans.  He wasn’t even mediocre.  He was pitiful – rushing for 19 yards on 13 carries.  The Steelers even lined up for a late 3rd and short play in the shotgun offense, rather than going with “Fast Willie” or his perennial back-up, Mewelde Moore.  If he can’t match up with the Bears, sans-LB Brian Urlacher in Week 2, I’d trade him for a back on a tandem rushing team (ie Bradshaw, etc.).

Braylon EdwardsWR Cleveland Browns – Braylon found the Dud list quite a bit last year and if Week 1 is any indication, this season may be another dismal outing for the once-promising Edwards.  Cleveland played catch-up for the entire second half of last week’s game hosting the Vikings, but managed to only find Edwards one time for a mere 12 yards.  Last year’s fantasy owners are offering condolences to this year’s suckers.

Steve Slaton – RB Houston Texans – A top-10 fantasy pick with promise.  That was the tag on Slaton.  How did he deliver to his fantasy fans in Week 1 hosting the Jets?  He rushed 9 times for 17 yards and lost a fumble.  Outside of a few receiving points, Steve let a lot of owners down this week.

Slaton was non-existent against the Jets in the Texans home opener.

Fantasy Sleepers 2009: Kevin Smith

Fantasy Sleeper 2009 - Kevin Smith - Online Photo No Source Available

As one of the few bright spots for the only 0-16 team in history last year, RB Kevin Smith showed in 12 games that he could hang with the big boys.  Smith gobbled up nearly 1,000 yards and averaged over 4 yards a carry doing it (in 12 games, mind you).

Going into 2009, expect Detroit to rely heavily on their rushing attack until their quarterbacks can gain some confidence, and Smith to receive the bulk of the attention.

Expect Smith to draft somewhere between rounds 3-5 and start for most 2-3 RB teams right out of the gate.

Fantasy Sleepers 2009: Dustin Keller

Fantasy Sleeper 2009 Dustin Keller - Online Photo No Source Available

Jets TE Dustin Keller fits the Fantasy Football Sleeper profile all too well.  The tight end job is his to lose but he doesn’t have to do much other than catch the ball to succeed.  In the NYJ offense, he’s not limited to blocking and with good quarterback play (Sanchez will need him as an outlet), he should excel.

A lot of experts have pegged him the next Dallas Clark and expect him to dramatically improve upon last year’s 48 receptions.

He won’t be highly coveted in your fantasy draft, but he’ll easily be a number 1 option in deeper leagues.  Expect him to draft between rounds 8-12 and cross your fingers that he’ll live up to the hype.
